GIS Portal of Mega Cities

Earlier in India, all the utilities like Water, Electricity, Telephone, Traffic Police, Fire Brigade and many more were managed through paper maps/sketches those were not to scale, available with the respective utility agencies. It was very difficult, expensive and time taking task to manage/maintain these utilities properly especially in the Mega Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, etc. where the network of these utilities are very dense and old.

Keeping in mind to use computers to Manage, Maintain and Plan these utilities effectively and efficiently in Delhi, it was required to have a Large Scale Basemap of scale upto 1:1,000 for Delhi and transfer all these utilities on this basemap.

The Utility Mapping Division was created and the Delhi Utility Mapping Project was started in the year 1992 with the objective to create a Large Scale Digital Basemap for Delhi and all the related data of Water, Sewage, Electricity, Police, Fire and Gas utilities to be superimposed on this basemap with the help of the respective utility agencies.

Creation of the basemap was based on the use of state-of-the-art technology such as Global Positioning System (GPS), Total Station, Digital Photogrammetric techniques and GIS softwares. Aerial photographs on scale 1:10,000 were used to create digital basemap on scale 1:2,500.

After successful completion of the project, several city management agencies like Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Police etc. are accessing the data on-line for their Planning, Execution, Management and Maintenance purpose through GIS based applications and the Planning Commission had initiated a project “Computer Aided Utility Mapping Project for Six Cities", to replicate the same technology to create the large scale basemap for the following six cities Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai.
